Gaming Console

Accessories for PDAs, laptops, notebooks, smart-phones and iPods but no accessories for gaming consoles? How could we disappoint you like that? Therefore to undo this great evil we shall provide you with information regarding accessories for gaming consoles. Yes, all gamers know that the gaming experience may be greatly enhanced by using joysticks, steering wheel and pedals and vibration controllers along with other accessories such as carrying cases for portable consoles and lights and stickers and a whole range of products that are made for the sole purpose of providing greater satisfaction when you use your gaming consoles. If you are an XBox user, you will probably have heard of XBox Media Center and if you are a PS2 user then you will probably know of the Eye-Toy. Such accessories are not a recent development in the gaming industry, Nintendo's NES Zapper from the late 80s is an excellent example of gaming accessories which enhance the gaming experience. Racing wheels, joysticks, wireless game-pads, mice, keyboards are all accessories which are available as options with most modern gaming consoles.

Antennas & Amplifiers

There are in essence (in our opinion) two kinds of antennas and amplifiers for cell phone signals. The first kind is for use in homes, offices, apartments, etc, that is to say in buildings. These are oftentimes accompanied by long lengths of coaxial cables, however, there is no doubt whatsoever that they do work. This means that while in your home, office, apartment, etc where the device is being used you will experience better cell phone signals and less static as well as downloads on your cell phone or smart phone or PDA. However one does have to take into consideration that like the signals broadcast by your mobile service providers, these signals too cannot pass through thick walls and steel re-inforced walls and ceilings. The other type of signal amplifier is for use in cars and other vehicles. These types of amplifiers also do work and will improve the number of signal bars of your cell phone or smart phone or PDA but rest assured that if you are stuck in the middle of a desert with no service from your cell phone company it is highly unlikely that this device will amplify the non-existent signals (and consequently you will be in the same pickle as without any such device).

Gadgets

Almost all mobile devices these days, no matter their main functionality, have the capability to play music. Therefore it is not surprising that the gadgets developed for these portable devices should also keep their music playing capabilities in mind. The most common gadget for most mobile phones and PDAs are portable stereo or surround sound speakers, this is because while most cell phones and PDAs can play music the speakers embedded in most phones can not provide the same degree of sonic quality that can be gained using surround sound or even stereo speakers. Most of these can connect using bluetooth or through the standard ports available in a PDA or smart phone. Mobile devices also include portable music players such as the Creative Zen, Microsoft Zune, Apple iPod, etc. So therefore it is only reasonable that there be gadgets to use with these devices as well. As with cell phones and PDAs, some times the music listening experience is just not satisfying enough with headphones, so there are also speakers (stereo and surround sound) for portable music players. A very nifty and handy gadget is the bluetooth adapter for music players, portable or otherwise. While you may not be convinced so far, you will appreciate that these devices will allow you to listen to music on your bluetooth headsets while still being able to receive calls from your mobile phones. As an example imagine that you are listening to your iPod and you are in your room, now normally you would have chucked your cell phone on your bed somewhere and will not be able to hear it ringing or feel it vibrating. But if you had the bluetooth adapter, you would be interrupted while you were listening to the music in your iPod (or PC or music player, etc) and be able to receive the call.

Camera

In this day and age, anyone who has a slightly expensive mobile phone or smart phone or PDA can be forgiven for not owning a camera for the difference in quality is now quite insignificant (in the higher priced phones at least) in the opinion of the author. In fact it is further my opinion that not long from now cameras and cell phones will be sold, not exclusively, but instead as a single product. Therefore, one should not be surprised if there are gadgets or devices available that make it easier to display photos, videos or music on your mobile cellular device more easily on television sets. A prime example of this is the Sony Ericsson MMV-100 Bluetooth device which enables one to do just that (by connecting through the RCA cable or directly into the SCART connector of your TV set). It is universally usable, that is to say it works on both NTSC and PAL sets. And if your TV has a good set of speakers then why not use them to advantage and play music from your mobile on them? However this device is not all work and no play. Instead of making presentations with your laptop, why not use one's PDA or smart phone and this device to make a presentation at work? Indeed, simple connect it to your projector and enable Bluetooth and you are good to go.

GPS Batteries

Garmin, Navman, TomTom and Yakumo, these are all names of GPS device manufacturers. And just like cell phone, smart phone or PDA manufacturers, the makers of GPS devices too ensure that only their own batteries work in their devices. Many is the time when one thinks that would not life be simpler if all electronic device manufacturers agreed to standardize the batteries they use in their devices so that customers can simply pick them up from their nearest store like we do AA, AAA, D, etc cells. However, there are certain factors which prevent this from happening and are common-sense enough that anyone can comprehend them. First and foremost, each electronic device (be it cell phone or GPS device, from the same manufacturer or from a different one) has different shapes, sizes, features, etc. This means that where a simple monochrome cell-phone with no camera or music playing capabilities would have very low power requirements; a high-end phone by the same manufacturer with a camera, music playing capabilities, bluetooth, infrared, WAP, animated screensavers and themes, etc would have comparatively higher power consumption. Another problem could be that most cell phones and PDAs have unique shapes and thicknesses and the batteries must be adjusted accordingly. The same applies to laptops and laptop batteries as well as GPS devices and therefore to GPS batteries.

Wireless

If you own a laptop and if your line of work or pleasure involves frequent usage of the Internet then you will know from firsthand experience how severely limiting it is to connect to the Internet through Cable/DSL or through dial-up, in fact one could go so far as to say it is crippling. After all, what is the point of having a laptop if you cannot connect to the Internet on the go anywhere, anytime? But worry not, it seems most laptop manufacturers are aware of this and duly incorporate wireless connectivity into their laptops, however there are some laptops which cannot connect to the Internet wirelessly and for them are available a host of options. If you own a laptop and want to connect to the net then you can do so by using a WiFi Wireless Lan Card which simply plugs into your laptop and is very easy to install and use. Another option is using GPRS or EDGE cards which allow you to connect to the net using your SIM card. Another option is to use a USB WiFi Wireless adapter. This last is particularly easy to install (plug it into a USB slot) and use. In any case, any and all of these options will allow a laptop user to connect to the net on the go and considering that wireless connections are now faster than wired connections there seems to be no drawback as far as performance is concerned in using wireless internet. All the same options are also available for desktop owners whose motherboards are a generation old, or more accurately lack wireless connectivity.

Booster Sticker

One must be at some point in his/her life see infomercials, yes we have seen them all; from the ever popular cook + bake + steam + non-stick miracle cookpots to the amazing shiny glittery jewellery. Through the course of our lives we have also seen a host of other products including car waxes and knives and slimming products/beauty products, etc. Most of you have probably also seen the cell-phone booster sticker (for those who haven't this is a sticker which when placed between the battery and the cell-phone will improve signals so much that you could make a call from outer space). Although their claims are mostly products of over-active imaginations and under-utilized thought processes, when this product is used you will actually find that while it does not work miracles, it does significantly (or visibly) improve your cell phone reception. You will see that your cell-phone usually has a few more bars of reception than it normally should and it will reduce static and momentary cutouts. So all in all it is a worthwhile product, just not a miracle to solve all your problems.

Also amongst other things, one will be able to find infomercials that claim that cell-phones cause brain cancer (or any other brain related disease) and their products will be able to reduce the risk of the said disease significantly. While it has not been conclusively proven that cell-phone signals cause brain cancer (or any such disease), there has been no proof to the contrary either. So for those of you who prefer to stay safe we can recommend the use of radiation protector safeguards and such, they are very easy to install and can protect you from harm (real or imagined or is it or is it all in your head?).

Kits

There are many types of kits for PDAs, however this next one is truly special: it's for iPods. So why a kit for iPods, after all they perform their job pretty well as it is. They are supposed to play music and you do not need any additional accessory for an iPod to do that. However, iPods do have one deficiency which is easily cured through the use of this kit, that is one cannot use his/her iPod to play music through a car sound system. Now there are a few novel ways of making this happen but the one we suggest is most ingenious, simply plug this accessory into your iPod and tune your radio to the appropriate frequency so that you can now listen to songs from your iPod on your car's sound system. The iPod FM transmitter works at varying frequencies on the car's radio and different frequencies may be selected by using switch combinations on the device itself.

Keyboards

Keyboards are not only necessary for laptops and notebooks, but in my opinion, they are completely and utterly indispensable for any and all mobile communication devices (that is until speech recognition is perfected or computers can be controlled through thoughts). Unless one grows up learning to type on mobile phone number pads (and ironcally many kids of this SMS generation do grow up so...) you will aprreciate having a full size keyboard to do your typing. Most keyboards for smart phones and PDAs are either available with Bluetooth connectivity or with Infra-Red (IR) connectivity. This ensures that these keyboards can be used without the hassle of installing drivers and plugging in wires. Bluetooth keyboards are the easier to use and are compatible with almost all Bluetooth enabled devices. They are also easier to use because one doesn't have to align the keyboard with the smart phone or PDA just so to ensure that it works. Other than that, features for portable keyboards are fairly standard and at most what varies is the colour, size, weight, number of keys, ease of use, compatibility and comfort. So one still has enough to choose from (most keyboards for PDAs and smart phones require an OS - such as Symbian, Palm OS, Pocket PC, Windows Mobile, etc).

Hands Free

Handsfree sets for mobile phones, smart phones and PDAs in general appear in two forms, that is: wired headsets and Bluetooth headsets. Each type has its associated advantages and disadvantages and one cannot clearly say which type is better without defining the use of the headsets first. For it is readily apparent that the Bluetooth headset is preferable to those who have to work and keep mobile and is therefore usually used for work. This is so because most Bluetooth handsfree headsets are designed to find around one ear and therefore allow the user to converse on the phone as well as with people directly around him/her easily. Bluetooth headsets are not generally suited for music listening because they cover a single ear allowing noise from the world around you to disrupt your listening (although there are some Bluetooth headsets which are geared towards music and consequently cover both ears and hence provide better sound quality). Another major issue is that Bluetooth headsets have limited talk time and have on average about a week's worth of standby time. This means that (usually) a separate charger is required for your headset as well. Wired headsets on the other hand while having the obvious disadvantage (of wires) on the other hand usually have better sound quality and as they do not need to be charged, they have unlimited talk time. There is the problem that wired headsets are powered through the phone cells so the smart phone or PDA will lose its charge quicker. on the other hand, Bluetooth headsets too consume the smart phone or PDAs charge through the Bluetooth transmission. So inconclusively, the type of headset you should use depends on your requirements, your phone's compatibility and battery life.
